Holistic Dentistry Sydney

Holistic dentistry is dentistry that treats the mouth as part of the whole body. At Sydney Holistic Dental Centre we combine fully qualified, AHPRA-registered clinical dentistry with three additional commitments: we assess your airway, breathing and sleep as part of your dental care, we use biocompatible materials and have been mercury-free since 1987, and we give you the evidence on both sides of contested questions so the final decision is always yours. We have practised this way in the Sydney CBD since 1983.

What Holistic Dentistry Means at SHDC

Holistic dentistry is often misunderstood, so let us be precise. It is not a rejection of modern dentistry. Every dentist at SHDC is university trained, AHPRA registered and committed to the same clinical standards you would expect from any quality practice. The difference is scope.

Your mouth is the gateway to your digestive tract and your respiratory system. The size, shape and alignment of your jaws affect how you breathe and how you sleep. Infections in your gums and jawbone can influence your general health, and the materials placed in your mouth stay in your body for decades. A holistic dentist takes all of that into account before, during and after treatment.

“I can’t do anything to anybody without taking their whole body into account. That has been my position for thirty years, and it is the position of this practice since 1983. It is simply how good dentistry should work.”

Our Approach

The Four Commitments Behind Everything We Do

1

Whole-person assessment

Every comprehensive new patient consultation includes an assessment of your breathing, sleep quality, jaw joints, and head and neck muscles, as well as your teeth and gums. Chronic headaches, snoring, teeth grinding and daytime fatigue frequently have dental and airway connections that a standard check-up never looks for.

2

Biocompatible materials

We choose restorative materials for how well they work with your body over the long term: BPA-free composite resins, ceramic restorations and metal-free options. We have not placed a mercury amalgam filling since 1987, a position the global profession has since moved toward, with a worldwide amalgam phase-out now agreed for 2034 (Minamata Convention COP6, November 2025).

3

Informed choice

On contested questions such as amalgam removal and root canal treatment, we present the mainstream professional position and the precautionary position side by side, with sources, and support the decision you make with your dentist and, where relevant, your medical practitioner. You will never be pressured toward a treatment at SHDC.

4

Prevention through the Five Pillars

Long-term oral health is built on how you sleep, breathe, eat, move and manage stress. Our Five Pillars of Health model shapes the advice we give every patient, because a filling lasts longer in a healthy body and many dental problems can be prevented before the drill is ever needed.

Our Four Flagship Areas of Care

Alongside the four flagship areas sits our Airway & Sleep centre of excellence, covering snoring, sleep apnoea, children’s mouth breathing, myofunctional therapy and dental-origin headaches. Because airway, sleep and breathing are assessed inside every new patient consultation, this work touches almost every patient we see.

Is Holistic Dentistry Evidence-Based?

Yes, and we deliberately hold ourselves to that standard. The oral-systemic connection is now mainstream science: the World Health Organisation’s 2024 guidance identifies mercury as one of ten chemicals of major public health concern, the US FDA has advised since 2020 that specific high-risk groups discuss amalgam alternatives with their dentist, and the links between sleep-disordered breathing, jaw development and general health are an active field of published research. Where the evidence is still contested, we say so plainly and show you both sides.

Being early is part of this practice’s story. We stopped placing amalgam 35 years before the world agreed on a phase-out date. We were assessing airways when few dental practices asked about sleep at all. Read the full story of the practice on our Our Story page.

Reviewed February 2026 — confirms phase-out and advises minimising amalgam use in vulnerable groups.

Common Questions About Holistic Dentistry

Is holistic dentistry the same as alternative dentistry?
No. Holistic dentistry at SHDC is conventional, university-trained dentistry with a wider scope. We use the same diagnostic standards, the same registration requirements and the same commitment to evidence as any quality practice. The difference is that we also assess how your mouth affects your breathing, sleep and general health, and we are careful about the materials we use.
Are holistic dentists real dentists?
Yes. Every dentist at SHDC holds a university dental degree and current AHPRA registration. Our principals hold postgraduate qualifications in clinical endodontics, oral implants and TMJ and sleep disorders.
Do I need a referral?
No referral is needed. Many patients are referred by integrative GPs, naturopaths and nutritionists, and many others find us through their own research. Either way, your care starts with the comprehensive new patient consultation.
Does holistic dentistry cost more?
Our fees reflect the time we spend, which is genuinely longer: a comprehensive consultation examines far more than teeth. Fees are transparent, provided in writing, and there is no separate charge for SMART protocols during amalgam removal. See our fees page for current ranges.
What is the difference between holistic and biological dentistry?
The terms overlap and are often used interchangeably. Both describe dentistry that considers whole-body health and material biocompatibility. We use ‘holistic’ because it best describes our whole-person assessment approach; the clinical substance matters more than the label.
